What is a title tag and how to optimize it with 8 actionable tips

As a preamble, know that the title tag and I are almost the same age, give or take 11 months. Whether that makes me the best person to talk about it, I don’t know. Whether it created a brotherly bond, I don’t think so.

However, I want to show you why this tag is important,

especially for the natural referencing of your website.

Definition of the title tag
The first time the title tag was mentioned was in an informal document dated October 1991 distributed within CERN that you can consult on this link . What is interesting is that in more than 30 years, what defines and what is a title tag has not changed at all.

The “Title Tag” which can also be called “Title Tag”, “Meta Title”.  “SEO Title” or even “SEO Title”, is an HTML tag which specifies the title of a web.  Page and which is found in the < head > section of your web page.

And it is precisely this HTML tag that is used by search engines to display the title of a page in search results (SERPs), or that can also be found when sharing links on social networks (unless the Open Graph Title is different of course).

If you want to find this tag, you need to access the source code of the page

Right click anywhere on the page then click inspect (or ctrl + shift + “i” on windows and cmd + shift + “i” on mac);
Go to the “Elements” tab;
Use the search function (ctrl+f or cmd+f) and find the <title> tag;
And there you have it. What appears between <title> and </title> is your title tag.

And now, if you go to Google and type in “No original page detected”, you should normally find the article in question in the first results (if I did my job correctly) with the text corresponding to the title tag in blue.

Also note that some social networks will use the title tag to fill in the metadata when sharing a post. In the case below, we find exactly the title tag and the meta description of my article.

Using the meta title when sharing on social networks
We find the content of the title tag when sharing the URL on a chat or social network unless a different Open Graph Title has been specified.
Meta title length
The length of a title tag in search engine results is between 50 and 60 characters, and more precisely 580 pixels.

Contrary to what many people think, the length of a title tag – just like that of a meta description – is measured in pixels. But between the letter “l” and the letter “B”, you see that these two characters do not have the same width.

So depending on the characters used, a title tag can sometimes even approach 65 characters.

Is there a minimum length? No, there is no minimum length required. However, as long as it is relevant to the user, do not deprive yourself in writing but always within the limit of 580 pixels.

How important is the title tag?

You are quite entitl to wonder about the importance of the title tag, especially after more than 30 years of existence and when we know the tens of thousands of modifications that have been made to search engine algorithms over the last few decades.

As is often the case in SEO in recent years, the challenge is twofold:

User experience;
Natural referencing.

When an Internet user performs a search on a search engine, he then quickly scans the titles of the proposed content. It is obvious that he will click on the b2b mailing list countries title. That seems to correspond to his intention and which will surely include the keyword of the search.

A subscriber to my newsletter recently wrote to me to ask what to do when you get the message “Original page: No original pages detected” in Google Search Console .

Short answer: 99% of the time you don’t need to worry when you get this message.

Now we’re going to elaborate a little more.

Where to find the information on the original page?
The message “No original pages detect” can be found in Google Search Console. To find it:

Log in to Google Search Console;
Paste a URL into the inspection bar;
Open the Page Indexing report.
You will then find the “Discovery” section. This section tells you how the page was first discovered by Google. It is composed of two fields:

Sitemaps;
Original page.

Sitemaps refers to the sitemap of the site where you might have included the URL to your new content.

Where to find the original page information in Google Search Console?
In this example, we see that there is indeed a sitemap in reference but no page.

A quick reminder of what an orphan page is:

a page belonging to an internet domain and not benefiting from any internal links, that is to say other pages of the site which include a link to the page in question.

So, the only question you need to ask yourself bs leads when you see this message in the Google Search Console discovery report is: “Does my page have internal links?” In other words: “Is my page an orphan page or not?”

If this page is an orphan, then add internal links from other thematically relevant pages on your site and optimize the internal link anchor .

Is it normal if the status persists for several months after indexing?

Yes, it seems that Google does not bother to update the information in this field. One of the top pages of one of my sites, published in December 2022, still does not have a referring page. Indicated in the GSC and yet it benefits from many internal links .

In summary
The “No original pages detected” status should not worry you in 99% of cases. The only question you should ask yourself when you see this status is “is my page an orphan”?

If it is not, don’t worry, everything is fine and don’t wait for.  Google to update the status because there is little chance of that happening.
